Virginia Worker Editorial Board member SNR submits the following piece continuing their research into Alden Global Capital’s assets on the tail of the recent newspaper strike against Alden’s gutting of that industry as well as their accumulation of trailer parks and predatory policies upon tenants across the state and beyond.

Last year, Homes of America filed more evictions at Massie’s Mobile Home Park than any other landlord in Montgomery County. The eight month eviction hiatus ended when tenants lost the appeal in their case against Homes of America, who let the water shut off on tenants they were in the process of evicting.

Homes of America is a shell company for Alden Global Capital, a nefarious hedge fund that avoids taxation through offshore banking. Alden is notorious for buying up local newspapers across the country, liquidating their assets, and cutting their staff. 

Yesterday in eastern Virginia, over 200 journalists, designers, and production workers engaged in a 24-hour walkout over their wages and threats to their 401k benefits from Tribune Publishing, which was purchased by Alden Global Capital in 2021.

The media you read and the trailers you rent are all controlled by the same cutthroat hedge fund that’s stealing from the poor, making people homeless, and keeping us dumb.

Rent at Massie’s has doubled for the vacant mobile homes on their lots. Tenants have had to wait more than seven weeks to get their stoves, outlets, and HVACs fixed. The Virginia Worker urges all tenants to file tenant’s assertions and to organize as neighbors against the management and owners of the park.

Alden – through Homes of America – has purchased over 1500 mobile homes across rural parts of America since 2020. They purchase the parks at enormous sums, way over the asking price. The connection between Alden and Homes of America is kept hidden from tenants because each purchase is made by an LLC under the previous name of the park – for instance, Massie’s was purchased from Billie Massie by Massie MHP LLC.

At The Virginia Worker, we believe in full transparency. We have a list of many of the parks Alden and Homes of America have purchased on the East Coast and we are providing it for you here. We know there are more parks in Florida as well.

Never before have we asked you to “like” or “share” an article of ours, but today is different. If we can circulate this article far and wide, tenants will finally be able to see who their landlord really is when they Google their park name. Right now, these tenants might not know who owns their mobile home parks.

We want the tenants at these properties to know that there is a class action lawsuit against their landlord in West Virginia and that their water bill became prorated because their landlord got in legal trouble for failing to pay water bills. We want these tenants to know that they aren’t alone if they are unable to get repairs done or if they are facing an unfair eviction. We want them to know that the only solution they have is to file tenant’s assertions so that they can put their rent money into escrow, and that if they want to take back control of their lives, they need to band together with their neighbors against Homes of America.
