The Virginia Worker Editorial Board issues the following statement on the necessity of forming an independent working class party for the Virginia working class.
One party supports a senile oligarch (including their “democratic socialists”) and another party vehemently supports a reactionary opportunist. The majority of American workers want nothing to do with these two fake “choices” dressed up as democracy. The working class gains nothing by voting for either Trump, Biden or any other candidate who may come to replace Biden for their demented condition.
We may not be able to vote for a worker candidate this election cycle, but we should utilize this moment to lay the foundation for a real alternative by establishing an independent working class party which will be beholden to a workers political program and which any candidate that may run under the banner of a Virginia workers party will be accountable to its membership and the working class in general.
The reality is any new path forward for Virginia workers will require years of work before any major breakthrough will occur. Those who recognize this fact will accept the task and not expect shortcuts or quick payout. This includes holding a series of conferences comprised of the left wing of the working class who are rooted in the unions and have real experience in organizing workers both inside the existing business unions and outside of them attempting to organize the unorganized, settling on a political program which doesn’t capitulate to reformism, but advances the struggle towards political power for the working class. The party must firstly be a vehicle for militant mass organization, to lead the class struggle and win concessions from the boss class across the state while accumulating power towards conquering the state.
Running for office from the local to the state level is something we must strive for and must be committed to the program of the party. There will be no entryism into the capitalist parties. Independence must always be ensured. It will also be the task of party militants to struggle within the unions to break the ties between unionists and the capitalist parties.
Rather than direct funds from the unions to these anti-worker parties we must struggle to put these funds towards the workers party and its candidates on all levels. The union bureaucracy will fight this effort, all the more reason to establish our party to more effectively combat the bourgeois camp within the working class.
We can no longer afford to displace this question. Now is the time to begin the task of party construction. All earnest proletarians in Virginia who are grounded in worker organizing must come together regardless of affiliation to whatever political sect and seek to establish principled political unity on the baseline understanding that the working class must have its own party, must fight for hegemony across the state and within the unions, and that we must resolutely fight against the various opportunists who draw their livelihoods from Democrat or Republican funded non-profits and fronts and who only care about their careers in bourgeois politics rather than working class emancipation.
